As an experienced Diabetes Nurse and Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner I have taught on the long term conditions wellbeing course. This course has included the use of mindfulness, which helps people come to terms with their long term condition by ‘Participants feel they are more-confident in their ability to take care of themselves and take greater control of their own life.’

I have developed and taught on the ‘Just Being’ Course in Bracknell and Wokingham College. This course is based on the principles of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and includes teaching mindfulness techniques. Participants on the course have underlying psychological difficulties and find that mindfulness can help them learn to experience their thoughts and learn to connect with their bodies.

Mindfulness enables you to connect with your internal thoughts, emotions as they appear. Being mindful creates an environment that allows you to begin to understand yourself on a deeper level. It can help you to develop patience and persistence in a busy life where you can learn to connect with yourself and others. The investment you put into practising mindfulness can assist in a life that is more meaningful. It can help you to access the weather of emotions that come into our lives and learn to be present with them. This acceptance can lead to a fulfilling life.

What is the importance of professional guidelines such as the UK Network’s Good practice Guidelines to you and your teaching?

Guidelines help to meet the continuing needs of professionals to improve the quality of service they provide. Everyone using the same guidelines helps to ensure the service they provide is consistent and Clients feel assured that they are in safe hands and peace of mind that the practitioner is adhering to recommended guidelines
